Can You Play Backgammon Offline?
Straight answer: NARDEON is a browser game and needs an internet connection — there's no offline mode, offline multiplayer or offline app download. Here's what that means in practice, what happens when your signal drops mid-game, and what to do when you're truly offline.

Why there's no offline mode
NARDEON is built around online play. Matches against real people run through a server: it rolls the dice, checks every move and keeps the clock, so neither player can cheat — and you can verify every roll afterwards. That's what makes fair online backgammon possible, and it needs a connection. The game itself lives on the web rather than in a store download, which is also why there's nothing to install or update.
So if you search for "backgammon offline", here's the honest picture:
| Mode | Needs internet? |
|---|---|
| Online with a random opponent | Yes, throughout the match |
| With a friend by link | Yes, throughout the match |
| Vs computer | Yes, to open the game |
| Two players, one screen | Yes, to open the game |
When the signal drops mid-game
Mobile connections come and go — in an elevator, on a train, in a tunnel. The game is built to survive short gaps:
- you get one minute to reconnect, whoever's turn it is;
- the board marks you as offline, so your opponent knows you haven't simply walked away;
- if you move while disconnected, nothing is lost: the game tells you the move wasn't sent and asks you to press Done when you're back;
- if both players drop out, the match stops;
- only if you're gone for more than a minute does the match go to your opponent.
The game reconnects by itself as soon as the network is back — just keep the page open. Opening the game in a second tab or on another device moves your seat there; the old tab tells you the game is open elsewhere.
Low on signal? Pick the right mode
- Weak but working connection: play the computer — no opponent waiting, no clock, no pressure if a page load is slow.
- Two of you, one device: Two players, one screen — no second phone needed.
- Stable connection: a quick match to 1 point against a real opponent.
Truly offline: flights, cabins, camping
Without any internet, nothing beats a real board. Backgammon sets are small and travel well, and the rules fit on a page: print the one-page backgammon rules before you go, or the long nardy rules if that's your game. When you're back online, your account, rating and match history are waiting.
What you get for staying online
- real opponents at any hour, matched by game and match length;
- a rating, a leaderboard place and records of your matches (with an account);
- tournaments and clubs;
- dice you can check yourself after every online match;
- no download, no updates, no ads.

FAQ
Does NARDEON backgammon work offline?
No. The game opens from nardeon.com and needs a connection. There's no offline mode and nothing to download in advance.
Can I play against the computer without internet?
You need a connection to open the game. NARDEON is built as an online game, so we don't promise any mode — including the computer — will keep working without one.
What happens if my connection drops during an online match?
You get a minute to come back. The board shows that you're offline, and if you made a move while disconnected the game asks you to press Done again once you're back online. If you're away for more than a minute, the match goes to your opponent.
Is there an offline multiplayer mode?
The closest thing is Two players, one screen: two people take turns on one phone, tablet or computer. It still needs a connection to open, but it doesn't need a second device.
Will you add an offline mode?
There are no concrete plans to announce. For now the honest advice for flights and the countryside is a real board — the printable rules sheet fits in your pocket.
